The power of vulnerability

Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.

—Brené Brown

Research professor Brené Brown has a thought provoking TED Talk called The Power of Vulnerability.

It’s consistently in the top ten most watched TED videos (30M views and counting). You should probably watch it. Here’s a link:

The Power Of Vulnerability

In addition to the potential personal benefits, I think that Brené’s insights are valuable to folks like us in a business context.

At the core, what we do for our clients is create change. Change is risky and therefore, causes fear. To help our clients overcome this fear and successfully make the change they seek, we need to build trust.

Trust that we recognize their unique challenges.

Trust that we understand their desired outcomes.

Trust that we have their best interests at heart.

Trust that we have the expertise to help them reach their goals.

Trust that we’ve got their back when things go wrong along the way.

Do you open yourself up to your clients in a way that will build relationships based on mutual trust?

Or do you establish a defensive position, hiding behind legalese-heavy contracts and hourly billing and change orders and finger pointing?

Yours,

—J
